About the studio

A Warsaw atelier rooted in Brest

Vera Kutavenka grew up in Brest, Belarus, in a family where organizing weddings and celebrations was a generations-old tradition. Watching her family and helping with the flowers and decor from a young age, she found her own passion for floristry and the art of creating unforgettable moments.

For the past five years, Vera has been running Zhyvitsa on her own in Warsaw — a new city and country for her — carrying that family tradition forward and translating it into a contemporary floral language. The studio's name, from the Belarusian word for "resin," captures that continuity: resin is a living substance that protects and preserves what matters most, much like she tries to hold, in flowers, the fleeting moments of her clients' lives.

Bouquets

Bouquets tied by hand, stem by stem

Bouquets are the studio's daily work. Here is how we make them, what we make them from, and what to expect when you order one.

Every bouquet is built from scratch, on the table, for a specific order. We start with the lead flower — the one that gives the bouquet its character — and choose everything else around it: supporting blooms, foliage, grasses, branches. Only once the palette works does the tying begin.

We work in the spiral technique: each stem enters the bouquet at the same angle, laid one over the next, so that all of them cross at a single binding point. That is what lets a bouquet hold its shape, stand on its own in a vase, and look equally good from every side. Stems are stripped of leaves below the binding point, cut on a slant and tied with sisal or ribbon — never with wire, which crushes the stems and cuts the flowers off from water.

We arrange seasonally, because a flower in season lasts longer, costs less and simply looks better. Spring runs on tulips, ranunculus and freesias; summer on peonies, garden roses and jasmine; autumn on dahlias and spray chrysanthemums; winter on amaryllis, branches and dried flowers. If you want a particular flower outside its season, we will tell you honestly whether it can be sourced and how long it will realistically last in a vase.

We don't keep ready-made bouquets sitting on a shelf. If you come to the studio, we'll tie one in front of you — you tell us who it's for, the occasion and the budget you have in mind, and we choose the flowers together. Phone and email orders are taken as they come; for larger arrangements, please allow us a day.

A good bouquet is one that looks just as considered from every side — and that you still want to look at a week later.

01

Re-cut the stems

Once home, trim 2–3 cm off each stem with a sharp knife at a 45° angle, and repeat every other day. A wider cut surface means better water uptake.

02

Change the water

Fresh, cool water every second day and a properly washed vase. No leaf should sit below the water line — that is where rot starts.

03

Keep fruit away

A radiator, a draught and a fruit bowl are a bouquet's three worst enemies. Ripening fruit releases ethylene, which noticeably speeds up wilting.
